Who we are

Ruth, Sid, Eimear, Steve, Simon & Tymek.

Ruth and Sid have been together since 2001 and in that time have worked together on many musical projects. In 2009 they decided to perform together as a duet and in 2011 they released their duet CD Love Forgiven. The CD was recorded at Recorded at Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Annaghmakerrig, Ireland and featured self composed works alongside traditional songs and settings of poems to music. Poets included Christina Rossetti, Sudeep Sen and Allen Ginsberg whose song Love Forgiven was the title track of the CD.

Peacock Angell duet have performed throughout UK and Ireland at folk clubs, theatres and arts centres also broadcast on radio internationally. In 2014 with support from Northern Ireland Arts Council Sid & Ruth created the Peacock Angell band inviting Irish flautist Eimear McGeown, pianist Steve Tromans, guitar/bassist Simon King and drummer Tymek Jozwiak to join them in recording tracks for their EP and videos that featured scenery from Northern Ireland.

Since then the band have performed at many venues including the Royal Shakespeare Company theatre, Moseley Folk Festival, Midlands Arts Centre, Birmingham Symphony Hall and Belfast Eastside Arts Festival. 2017 will see the release of our first full Peacock Angell album featuring new and existing material.

Sid was born in Bangor, County Down, Northern Ireland and in his youth played in rockabilly and folk bands. He taught himself music theory whilst working in the local library and left for England in 1997 to pursue formal studies. Arriving at Birmingham Conservatoire in 2000, where he met Ruth, he set up SURGE Ensemble which has since grown into a 22 piece Orchestra. SURGE has performed at festivals throughout UK and Ireland and been recorded and broadcast for BBC Radio 3. One of Sid's pieces Hallucinogenic Garden was nominated for a British Composers Award and SURGE's 2nd CD La Fête was launched at Midlands Arts Centre with jazz great Django Bates as special guest.
Sid is currently Associate Artist at Midlands Arts centre with SURGE and presents regular concerts and festivals throughout the year. With musical interests spanning folk, roots, jazz and classical. Sid has worked with musicians from around the world and held residencies in Poland, Berlin, Paris, Ireland and most recently as musician in residence with Sichuan Opera Troupe in Chongqing, China.

Ruth was raised in Derbyshire, England. She is a multi instrumentalist, singer, composer and arranger. After completing her studies at Birmingham Conservatoire Ruth became a member of The Rainbow Chasers led by folk legend Ashley Hutchings of Fairport Convention. She also works with Ashley on projects including Morris On and Psychedelia to Sonnets. She enjoys working as a core member of several bands and as a session musician. She has recorded and performed with numerous artists including Jamie Smiths MABON, Rufus Wainwright at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2016, Jim Moray, Andrea Begley winner of The Voice 2013 and many others. Ruth was a finalist in the International Song Writing Competition 2013 and received the Birmingham Conservatoire Composition Prize at her graduation. Ruth is a key member of Sid's SURGE Orchestra both as violinist and vocalist. In addition to Peacock Angell Ruth is working in a new folk string quartet called The Froe. The Froe has released an EP, been broadcast on BBC Radio 2 and are performing regularly throughout UK. www.ruthangell.com

A First Class Honours graduate from the Trinity College of Music, London, the Irish flautist Eimear McGeown has established a busy and varied career both classically and on the Traditional Irish flute. She has appeared as a soloist in North and South America, South Korea, Japan, The Philippines and throughout Europe. Two of her most notable performances have been on BBC's Last Night of the Proms and the World Premiere of Dave Morris' Concerto in the Library of Congress in Washington DC. She has recorded with various artists on albums for Decca, Universal and Chandos Record labels and played on BBC Radio, Classic FM and RTE Lyric FM.
On the Irish flute, she holds two All Ireland titles and has released a Celtic EP on iTunes. She has recorded with Barry Douglas on two of his Celtic albums which feature several of her own compositions and also recently performed them together with Camerata Ireland in the Kennedy Center, Washington DC. Eimear has recorded at the Abbey Road Studios, for the video game Runescape and played in Lord of the Rings in the West End, London. She performed at the Sori International Music Festival in South Korea with the Irish Memory Orchestra and recently as a featured soloist with Libera in Tokyo’s Opera City Concert Hall. She is also involved in the Pop music scene and played with the X Factor winner Matt Cardle on the National Television Awards, the rock band Amsterdam at the Glastonbury Festival, and played support to The Pogues in the Echo Arena, Liverpool.

Steve Tromans has been active on the music scene since the 1990s, performing in over 6,000 concerts on a national and international level, in venues ranging from festival stages to the intimacy of club spaces. He is involved, as band-leader and sideman, in a variety of different ensembles, working across the fields of jazz, improvising music, folk, contemporary, and world. As a composer, Tromans has written in the region of 100 works, with major commissions from Birmingham Town Hall/Symphony Hall, Jazzlines, ZeroKlassikal, and Birmingham Jazz. He has featured on BBC Radio 3 Jazz on 3 programme, in a special broadcast focused on his Birmingham-Chicago Improvisers’ Ensemble project, bringing together expert improvising musicians from the music scenes in the two cities. In recent years, Tromans has been undertaking practice-as-research in jazz, receiving publication in a growing number of academic journals and books, and delivering lecture-recitals at a series of conferences in the fields of music, philosophy, and performance studies. Tromans has released a total of 18 albums to date, with planned further studio and live recordings in 2017 and beyond.

Simon King – Amazing talent on Guitar, Bass, Drums and Piano is a frequent collaborator on many musical projects. Simon has been involved in Jazz, improvised and recorded music for over 11 years and has played with many influential jazz musicians, including Randy Brecker, Tim Garland, Alan Barnes, Jim Mullen, Norma Winstone and Dave Swarbrick. Simon has also recently appeared with pop singer Jane McDonald and as guitarist with the legendary Drifters. He won the Musician's Union Outstanding Musician Prize in 2003 and 2005, was a finalist in the 2001 Perrier Young Jazz Awards and has performed his own works on

BBC Radio 2. Simon is endorsed by Faith guitars and has a highly successful you tube following as tutor and performer. As well as being a busy musician Simon runs the successful French Panty restaurant in Ludlow which is recommended in the Michelin Guide.

Tymek Jozwiak is one of the busiest drummers based in Birmingham, UK. He works predominantly in the field of jazz and improvised music but is also involved in folk and early music projects. While a student at the Birmingham Conservatoire, Jozwiak has been awarded the Tony Levin Drum Prize by the legendary British jazz drummer himself. Tymek is currently working with some of the finest musicians and band leaders in Britain including Mike Fletcher and Olie Brice (Fletcher/Brice/Jozwiak), Sid Peacock ( SURGE Orchestra, Peacock Angell), Steve Tromans (Axis Point) and David Austin Gray (One Many People, Little Church). He has worked with Tony Kofi, Paul Dunmall, Mark Sanders and Iain Ballamy. With K'antu Ensemble he appeared live on the Radio 3 programme "In Tune". He has performed at many clubs and festivals across the UK and Europe including Cheltenham Jazz Festival and most recently the Prague Jazz Festival as part of a tour across Czech Republic and Slovakia.
